Save Your Money Honey

Happy Valentine’s Day! I heard this week that 61% of people believe this is a commercial day. To me, those people are sort of like the Grinch who stole Christmas of Valentine’s Day– “the Ba Humbugs of love.”

I love Valentine’s Day!  A special day dedicated to expressing love. Why not?!

Of course we should not reserve our expressions of love for just one day of the year; but what if this one heart filled day can spark something in us? What if it can develop a deeper connection? What if we do feel more loving to ourselves or those around us?

I believe this is all good stuff! Yummy, juicy, lovely stuff!

But for those of you that still believe this is just a “Hallmark Holiday,” here are two things you can do to get to the heart and intention of this day without spending a pretty penny.

Number One – Do the Love Languages Quiz

“The one who choses love will find appropriate ways to express that decision every day.” Gary Chapman

One of the best ways you can nurture your love relationship is to understand your partners “Love Language.” In The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, he reveals five distinct ways we communicate love:  Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Gifts, Quality Time and Physical Touch. Most of us enjoy receiving love in all five ways; however, we typically have two that are our primary love languages.

What tends to happen is that we communicate our love to our partner in our own love language because that is how we feel loved. It is sort of like speaking Italian to someone who only understands French – your message is not heard, felt or completely understood. When your gift of love is not understood it leads to frustration.

When we have different love languages and our partner communicates their love to us in their love language, we do not feel the love they are trying to communicate to us. They feel frustrated that we do not “get it” and we feel unloved.

Take the free on line Discover Your Love Language quiz. Over a nice dinner or chocolate fondue for two have a discussion about your love languages. Share what they are with each other and share examples of times you each felt loved by the other. See where this leads.

Number Two – 10 Reason’s Why

Take a fresh piece of paper and write your love’s name at the top followed by 10 Reason’s Why I LOVE YOU! Then simply number and name 10 different reasons why you love your sweetheart. Make your reasons as personal and unique as you can. Feel free to throw in some humour where appropriate.

As you work through this you may feel your own heart swelling. That’s a good thing! But just wait until you experience the response. Your sweetheart will be touched that you took the time and thought to put together such a meaningful gift. This is a great gift for your kids as well!

So my loves …my wish for you this Valentine’s Day is that you experience a deeper and more meaningful love connection with yourself and those you love. Happy V Day!
