42 Baby!

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams says that 42 is the “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.” The number was apparently calculated by a super computer over a period of millions of years. The problem is, no one knows what the question is. I personally have not read the book, nor am I likely to. The love of my life introduced me to the special number several years ago when we first started dating.

I turned 42 a few months ago and declared that this is going to be “my year;” the year that I get the answers to my most important questions. What is my purpose in life? When will my family come together? Will my daughter’s transition to High School go well? Will I create something new?  I am choosing for now to be my time. In fact, I even chose to throw myself a birthday party in honor of this fabulous year.

Choice is a powerful thing. In fact, I believe it is the only thing we come to life with that no one can ever take away. Our life is made up from the choices we make, big and small, each and every day. We choose what to do and then choose how we will react to the circumstances that result from the choices we make.

So you might be saying you have three or twelve more years to get to 42, or that you are now past the magic number – but that is not the point. There is no magic in the number. The magic lies in the choice to believe this is “my year.”
