Glow Girl! Jill Dahl

I have always been a teacher.

I completed my Bachelor’s of Education and taught high school for 5 years as an English and Home Economics teacher.  I loved my students, but at the end of my 5th year, I felt that there were many things about the profession that was incongruent with the way I was wired.  So I made a crazy leap from teaching to the financial industry.

For almost a decade in banking, I got to use my teaching skills both with clients, colleagues, and eventually staff that reported to me when I moved into management.   I loved the challenge of producing results and climbing the corporate ladder.

During the second half of that decade with the bank, I had been working intensively with a therapist.  As I peeled back layers during those sessions, a new, more authentic, me started to emerge.  My therapist told me that it is common for people who undergo a significant emotional transformation to decide to make a drastic career change.  Sure enough, towards the end of 2013, I knew my time in the corporate world had come to an end.

Secondhand Therapy was born last year as a result of asking myself what comes as naturally to me as breathing (thanks to Danielle LaPorte!).  Besides knowing that I can’t help but teach, I also realized that people were constantly asking me about my therapy sessions, but were too scared or broke to go to the therapist themselves.  I was always giving out “secondhand therapy” (as my friend Esther called it), based on what I was learning or reading.  I knew that my ability to decode information and break it into bite-size pieces for others had always been an asset in my career, but I had never considered translating this into my own company.

It is both exhilarating and terrifying to take the essence of who you are and try to turn it into a full time business.  Choosing to evolve into a bigger version of myself requires courage on a daily basis.

What has been YOUR biggest challenge or life obstacle that YOU feel has dimmed YOUR GLOW?

I think my biggest challenge has been allowing myself to be BIG.  I can identify this only as a result of reading Tara Mohr’s book “Playing Big” last year.  I always thought of myself as courageous, but that book made me realize that I had been playing small because of the shame I had carried from when I tried to play big in my younger years.  Deciding that I was going to play big in both my personal life and my business has altered the course of my life.

I now know that if I’m feeling scared when I’m taking risks with my business, this is often because I’m occupying a bigger space than I’m used to.  This is a good thing.  Bring on that type of fear!!!

How have YOU grown as a woman in the last year? What lessons, insights or ah-ha moments have you had?

Besides the decision to play big, I think my biggest ah-ha moment was realizing that I needed to let go of my Plan B for 2015.  What I mean by that is, as my business has been gaining momentum over the past few months, I was holding myself back because I felt like I needed to be sensible and not take too big of a risk.  So I had lined up a Plan B for 2015.

I cannot describe the amount of anxiety that this Plan B somehow created for me.  I ended up talking with my therapist about it quite a bit.

I usually use the question, “What is the bravest thing I can do?” to guide me when I’m making any decision (thanks to Brené Brown).  It turns out that the bravest thing for me to do was scrapping my Plan B and staying at home full time with my online business.  It was so freeing to give myself permission to do this!  I literally created a permission slip for myself and posted it on Instagram as public declaration.

By the end of this month I will be launching my new website, as well as a series of “Introducing You” eClasses designed to help you get to know your authentic self.

In the meanwhile, I am giving away a free 30 page eBook, “Start Investing in Your Emotional Wellbeing: 25 Practical Tips to Move Beyond Survival Mode.”  I am also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and Vancity Buzz, with occasional guest posts appearing on blogs such as Tiny Buddha.
